I graduated from Plymouth University in September 2011 with a 2:1 in Multimedia Production and Technology. I chose this degree because of my interest in finding innovative and creative methods to tackle existing problems and to ultimately fill voids in the vastly diverse market of today. Studying this degree has enabled me to decipher clients' desires with originality and innovation. This is demonstrated throughout my three-year period studying at university alongside the scope, and content of projects and campaigns I have run both as a sabbatical officer and at OMD.

Heartbeat of Plymouth

As my final year project for my module 4D, I created a piece of work that symbolizes the heartbeat of Plymouth. I firstly created an audio visualiser that turns live audio data in space around the microphone into a visual output.

I altered the audio input so instead of receiving the data from close proximity it is streaming in via the web. I decided to use Plymouth's air traffic control centre, as it provides a constant stream of data around the comings and goings of people in the Plymouth area.

I then decided the colours used in the visualisation would be taken from a live webcam based in Plymouth. I am currently using a webcam that is based on Dartmoor, the link is shown below:

If when the evening or bad weather is approaching causing dark blue and grey colours to be seen, my visualisation corresponds with this data looking like below:

The project intends to represent the heartbeat of Plymouth, hence its name. The heartbeat of Plymouth produces an output which is representative of both audio and visual data in the local area, it shows the city as a living organism.

A video showing the project working at different points of the day is shown below:
